Messi in doubt for Champions League opener against Celtic

BARCELONA:

Barcelona striker Lionel Messi’s availability for Champions League opener against Celtic next week remains a doubt after tests confirmed that the five-time World Player of the Year is suffering from a groin injury.

Messi returned to Spain after aggravating the injury as he scored the winner against Uruguay last Thursday in his first match with Argentina since reversing his decision to retire from international football.

Messi returning to Argentina squad

In a statement on Monday, the Catalan club said that the tests had confirmed an injury to his left groin and that Messi will “lower the demands of his training sessions in the next few days.”

The Spanish champions refused to state how long Messi will be sidelined for, but Barca are unlikely to take any risks for Alaves’ trip to the Camp Nou on Saturday with seven matches to come in 22 days. “Everything is fine, I have to slow things down as I recover with physio, but it’s nothing to worry about,” Messi posted on his official Facebook page.

Messi’s Argentina return in doubt

Messi had started the season in fine form, scoring three times as Barca won the Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla and opened their La Liga title defence with back-to-back victories over Real Betis and Athletic Bilbao.

Argentina boss Edgardo Bauza said Messi had gone against the wishes of Barcelona’s doctors to make a triumphant return to the national team having dramatically reversed his shock decision to retire from international duty after missing a penalty in Argentina’s Copa America final defeat to Chile in June.

The news means that Messi will also Miss Argentina’s latest World Cup qualifier away to Venezuela on Tuesday.

Shahzad leaves National T20 Cup after omission from Pakistan squad

Out of favour’ opening batsman Ahmad Shahzad decided to return home to Lahore from the ongoing National T20 Cup after learning that he was unable to make it in the squad for Pakistan’s T20I match against England in Manchester on September 7, Press Trust of India reported on Saturday.

According to his teammates, Shahzad, who was leading Lahore Blues in the tournament in Rawalpindi, was heartbroken after he was omitted from the international match.

“He came to know about the situation after the match and he broke down,” said one teammate. “He sat in a corner and one could see he was in tears.”

Another teammate added: “He left for Lahore after informing the team management that he was not feeling well.”

Pakistan announce squad for T20I against England

The 24-year-old who has played 11 Tests, 77 ODIs and 44 T20I matches for Pakistan, has been ignored alongside Umar Akmal by the national selectors for the entire tour of England. They were omitted from the training camp set up in Kakul prior to the tour and chief selector, Inzamamul Haq, made it clear they were dropped on disciplinary grounds based on reports from the team management.

Previously, Akmal met with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Shaharyar Khan and tendered a formal apology. However, Inzamam said that while both were talented players, talent alone would not suffice and the duo needed to do more to regain confidence of the board, selectors and management.

Mohammad Irfan ruled out of remaining England tour

Nevertheless, with Pakistan suffering defeat after defeat in England in the ODI series, sources have revealed that both players could be back in the running for the T20I series against the West Indies from September 23 in the UAE.

“Inzamam recently had a long discussion with both of them and he and head coach, Mickey Arthur, will decide on the future of these two players after the series in England,” said one source.

Germany: Ahmadiyya World Head Says Media Should Promote Peace in the World

During his Friday Sermon, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad mentioned that this year was the 125th anniversary since the first Jalsa Salana took place in the small Indian town of Qadian in which just a few dozen people participated.

As the 41st Jalsa Salana (Annual Convention) of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Germany began earlier on Friday, 2nd September, 2016 with a Friday Sermon delivered by the World Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad Khalifa Masih V, enjoined media practitioners across the globe to promote peace.

Urging the media to promote peace Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said “the media should play its role in establishing peace in the world by being fair and just in it’s reporting. For example, here in Germany today many thousands of people have joined together in order to promote peace, yet the media will not give it anywhere near as much coverage as it would to reports of terrorism or extremism.”

Prior to the Friday Sermon, His Holiness raised the Flag of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community (Liwa-e-Ahmadiyyat) to officially inaugurate the event, whilst the German National Flag was also raised.

During his Friday Sermon, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad mentioned that this year was the 125th anniversary since the first Jalsa Salana took place in the small Indian town of Qadian in which just a few dozen people participated.

His Holiness also outlined the true objectives of the Jalsa Salana as laid down by the Founder of the Jama’at “the purpose of our Annual Convention is to rejuvenate and increase the faith of Ahmadi Muslims and to bring about a spiritual and moral reformation in their lives. Further, it’s purpose is to spread the truth peaceful teachings of Islam and to increase in brotherhood and love for mankind,” said Huzur.

He added that “it is a source of deep regret if a person considers this Jalsa Salana to be a worldly festival rather than coming here with pious intentions. Therefore, we should set aside all forms of materialism and worldliness during these three days and thereafter when you return to your daily lives you should do so with the firm conviction of continuing to display the highest standards of morality and piety at all times.”

Both prior to and following the Friday Sermon, His Holiness held a press conference with members of the German media during which he answered questions about the purpose of Jalsa Salana, the continued rise of terrorism and extremism and the refugee crisis in Europe.

Upon being asked about widespread fear of Islam in Germany, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said “at the very start of the Holy Quran it states that Allah the Almighty is He who is Gracious and Ever Merciful and so it is impossible for Islam to advocate any form of cruelty, injustice or brutality. The Islam that I know and practice is a religion of love, peace and harmony.”

Regarding the rise of terrorism and extremism in the world, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said “let it be clear that if any Muslim conducts a terrorist attack or any other type of atrocity then they are acting completely against Islam’s teachings and seek only to serve their own vested interests.”

In response to a question about the integration of Muslims in Germany and the West, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said “in my opinion to go to a nightclub or to abandon your peaceful held religious beliefs is not integration. Rather, I believe that integration is to love your nation, to serve it and to sincerely work towards its progress. Indeed, the Holy Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him) taught that to love one’s nation is an essential part of the Islamic faith.”

Huzur also met with Germany politician, Christian Durr who came to attend the Jalsa Salana and to welcome His Holiness to Germany.
